Cotino Lagoon planned community

Walt Disney Company: Water Filtration

Project Details

Scope of Work

The Cotino Lagoon project involved the construction and commissioning of large-scale water features in Rancho Mirage, California. The work included verifying layout, preparing elevations, and completing all waterproofing requirements for the lagoon and related structures. Crews installed piping and conduit routing to the equipment rooms, hydraulic components, fittings, skimmers, intakes, recirculation systems, lighting, and portable robotic cleaning systems. Mechanical and hydraulic equipment such as pumps, piping, level sensors, control valves, gauges, filters, and gas-fired heaters were installed and tested. The scope also included the installation of an autofill system, chemical delivery and distribution systems with bulk storage and transfer piping, electrical panels, controls, sensors, and alarms tied into the building management system. Caliagua furnished all labor, materials, and equipment necessary to deliver a fully functional and operational lagoon water feature system.

Community Benefit

Built to be the centerpiece for Disney’s planned community in Rancho Mirage, the 24-acre Crystal Lagoons® amenity is positioned as the development’s social and recreational hub, offering swimming, kayaking and paddle-boarding, which broadens local leisure options beyond traditional desert amenities. The project includes both private and public beaches, indicating some level of non-resident access in addition to resident use. Disney also highlights parks, pathways, and a mile-long promenade opening alongside the lagoon, which adds walkable open-space and connectivity within the area. Previous coverage by local media has noted day-pass access to the town center tied to the lagoon activation, signaling opportunities for broader community participation and visitation. From a sustainability standpoint, Crystal Lagoons states its technology is engineered to use minimal water and energy compared with traditional amenities, aiming to lessen environmental impact while delivering a large aquatic feature.
